Nevertheless, most articles were encouraging, if small, stories of Australian success, and the language was more consistent and positive. For instance, unlike the Rome coverage no mention was made of ‘cripples’, but instead the term Paralympics recurred frequently, and there were celebrations of the gold medals won by ‘our paraplegics’.
Back home in Melbourne the media interest in the Tokyo Paralympics was considerably greater than that for the previous Paralympics in Rome.
